THE MARTINI -
SYRUP MAGAZINE FEATURED DRINK

The history of this timeless cocktail varies from one end of the country to another. There are many differing arguments about who was the first person to create this classic cocktail.

The British have always assumed that the drink’s name came from the Martini & Henry rifle, used by the British army in 1871. It was said that the rifle and the drink shared a strong kick.

Americans have managed to come up with two historic accounts about the invention of the Martini.

The San Francisco story…

“Professor” Jerry Thomas, a legendary bartender, was claimed to have first named the Martini. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1825. When he reached San Francisco in 1849, he became a barman at the El Dorado. Thomas developed a reputation for his amazing antics and inventive cocktails. As the story goes on, a traveler on the way to Martinez, California, walked into the bar, threw a gold nugget on the table and asked Thomas to shake up something special. Thomas agreed with a nod and claimed that special cocktail would be called the Martinez.

The New York story…

This story of the Martini is the most recent and probably the most reliable. In 1911 at the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York, Martini di Arma di Taggia mixed half and half London Gin, Noily Prat Vermouth and orange bitters. He then chilled the drink on ice and strained it into a chilled glass. The regulars at the Knickerbocker asked for variations of the Martini and added the olive.

Regardless of the history, the Martini is the perfect addition to the list of historic and classic cocktails. For each generation and for each genre there are many variations of this traditional cocktail. Below is a list of endless combinations you can try:
